Let’s start the story from the begining.. first there was the industrial revolution (1750-1850), all industries at the time were revolutionized by “technology”. Agriculture, manufacturing, mining, transportation and even technology was revolutionized by the innovations of the time (steam engines, water wheels, etc). Then there was the second industrial revolution (1850-1920), this revolution gave birth to production lines and mass production. Followed by that there were three periods; the atomic age, the jet age and the space age – these three periods are inter-weaved together and they were characterized by advances in atomic, jet and space technology. The Digital Age – also know as the Computer Age or Information Age – started in the 1970s and it really flourished with the introduction of the personal computer and exploded with the introduction of the world wide web.

Since the 1970s, software started to run everything in our lives even things that you may not know are running on software. From your car engine to the machine controlling the IV drip in hospitals.. Everything runs on software and it’s not going to change for a long time.

A number of industries are being run on software and delivered online from movies to books and from agriculture to national defense and this is happening now because the industry now is being build on top of four decades into the computer revolution and two decades into the rise of the modern Internet. This allows software to be delivered at a global scale.

10 years ago there were 50 million people connected to the internet, nowadays, there are over 2 billion people connected to the global network. 10 years from now, we expect 5 billion people to be connected to the internet every day and all the time thanks to smartphones.

Here are a few examples of why software is everywhere and will even be more ubiquitous in the future:

  1. Books: in 2001 Borders decided to leave it’s “online book business” to Amazon because they didn’t believe that it will amount to anything. Amazon now is the largest bookstore on the planet. At the heart of it, it’s a software company that has proven to reinvent itself with the times. Now, the books are even software!
  2.  Movies: Blockbuster didn’t move quickly online. Along came Netflix and changed the way people watch movies. Netflix is now the largest video services company. What is interesting is the next step in the cycle which is making companies like TimeWarner and Comcast change their strategies to become software companies to become a part of the idea of “TV anywhere”. There are rumors that Apple is coming up with the iTV which is poised to revolutionise the way consumers watch TV.
  3. Music: The largest music companies today are software companies, Apple, Pandora, Spotify. The traditional record companies exist only to provide these companies with content.
  4. Entertainment: The fastest growing entertainment companies nowadays are video game companies. They are just software companies in an industry that has doubled in size from $30 billion to $60 billion in the last 5 year! Even within the video games industry, there are tiers of companies; traditional companies like EA and Nintendo are finding their revenue dwindle slightly and newer software only companies like Zynga (makers of Farmville) and Rovio (makers of Angrybirds) are finding their revenues soar.
  5. Photography: The industry was eaten by software quite some time ago. it’s hard to buy a phone now that doesn’t have a “software camera”. Photos get upload to the cloud for automatic archiving too with software companies.
  6. Direct Marketing: The largest direct marketing company is Google. Others in the space are foursqure, livingsocial, groupon. They are using software to eat into the retail business – an industry that has been traditionally resilient against software.
  7. Telecom: The fastest growing telecommunication company of our day is Skype. A software company that was recently bought by Microsoft for $8.5 billion. Traditional telecommunication companies like AT&T and Verizon have survived just by partnering with software companies like Apple.
  8. Recruitment: The largest recruitment company is Linkedin. Linkedin is eating nicely in a $400 billion industry
  9. Value Chain: Even value chain companies that exist mainly in the physical world are getting affected and embracing software. Cars are now largely run on software that runs the engine, control safety features, entertains passengers, guides the driver to their destination, etc. In the near future, car driving will be controlled by software thanks to initiaves like the Google Driverless Car.
  10. Logistics: The largest companies use software to control their logistics and distributions. FedEx and UPS can be viewed as software companies that have trucks and planes as their arms.
  11. Mining, Oil & Gas: These dirty industries are using software visualisation to become increasingly efficient in where and how they dig and extract.
  12. Finance: The finance industry has been largely transformed by software a few decades ago. Only 8% of the worlds currency is in cash, the rest is electronic transaction that exist only on the internet. The derivatives and trading markets are largely run by software algorithm that analysis and trades on behalf of human beings.
  13. Defense: Software now runs fighter jets, tanks, guided missiles, etc. In the future, the modern software will be augmented with software devices that provide second by second intelligence needed to keep the soldier safe.
  14. Health Care & Education: These two industries are the last two industries yet to be majorly affected by software especially Education. Education hasn’t changed in the last 100 years and it’s time for clever software companies to innovate in this sector
A lot of people are still waiting for the software revolution to come and so they should. Even software companies like Microsoft are facing challenges from the likes of Google’s Android and Salesforce. Every business in every industry should embrace the revolution otherwise they are putting themselves at a high risk of being left behind.
Software is here to stay and that’s why we are excited about what we do. We at Zealed have not only been developing custom software, web applications and mobile applications for over a decade now, but also has helped companies reach their potential, reinvent their business model and succeed.

Facebook has made headlines earlier today announcing it’s acquisition of photo sharing app Instagram for a whopping $1 billion dollars. The staggering purchase price becomes even more shocking if you’ve learned that Instragram virtually is not making any revenue and is only run by a dozen people (13 to be exact)

Facebook Buys Instagram For 1 Billion Dollars

Facebook Buys Instagram For 1 Billion Dollars

Why would facebook spend $1 Billion dollar just before it goes public? There are a few angles to this..

Facebook is valued at $100 Billion dollars meaning that each user is worth about $118. On the other hand, Instagram has 36 Million users which makes a user worth $28 dollars but some of those users are already facebook users.

so why else would facebook buy Instagram? We think it’s preemptive attack on (or defense against) pinterest – the fastest growing social network in history. Pinterest is essentially a photo sharing social network based on interest. Instragram is a general photo social network, with some clever facebook integration, Zucckerburg could defend against Pinterst and add more value to facebook.

Some are saying that this acquisition is as clever as when Google acquired YouTube for $1.65 Billion, so it seems facebook is the real winner in the deal although the two founders of Instrgram netted $400 million and $100 million respectively as well as the 11 staff members who will share $100 million. Not a bad payout for 2 year worth of work.

Google has surprised everyone by announcing Project Glass – their new augmented reality glasses. First there were speculation that it could be April Fools (Google is famous for pulling a few tricks on the first day of April and this year they didn’t disappoint with 23 of those tricks) but it turns out that it is true and legit and that Google is ready to hit the stores with their new glasses by the end of this year. Their Google+ page says that they are starting a “human” test pilot program from now until the end of the year to iron out the kinks.

Google Glasses

Google Glasses

First of all, congratulation to Google for coming out with something innovation and bold. It has been a while since they have innovated. Google search was innovative, Gmail was innovative too but then after that it was just a string of expensive purchases (YouTube, Android, Writly, etc) or Complicated ideas (Yes, we all still remember Google Wave!).

But…

If you’ve seen the promo video on YouTube you’ll notice a few things.. the first of which is no facebook or twitter integration. Google has opted to show that you can share photos with your circles.. mmm.. is Google trying to protect and promote its own Google+, is that borderline evil? I’ll leave you to decide..

The other thing that is not obvious in the video is the shape of those glasses. The glasses are ugly- at least in their current form. Possibly they have shot the video from the first-person view for that reason. It’s just a plastic band with a weird little plastic screen on one eye only. If google is going to be serious about making this a success, then they have to get D&G or Ray-Ban on board. Having a bulky phone is one thing but having ugly glasses is a completely other thing.

The other question is usability, when a person is using their phone they can reply to text messages privatly without anyone knowing but if the interface to interact with the glasses is voice then everybody is going to be knowing what’s going on. Imagine the situation in a crowded place like a train. Everybody is talking to themselves (or their glasses really).

In addition to that, what if you are actually looking at something in real life and then a map layer hovers over and you miss what you are looking at. Unless it’s done really well, it could be a real annoyance.

Another question that begs to be asked is about  “positioning”, when Apple came out with the iPad, they positioned the product between a phone and desktop/laptop. it had a position, it had potential usage (media player, book, game console, quick email and browsing, etc). Where does Google position the glasses? I think they want to replace the phone but i don’t see it replacing the phone, but i think what would be more resonable is to treat it as a visual bluetooth device that works with the phone in your pocket.

which takes nicely to the next point “health”. Google mentioned that the glasses will get the information using 3G which is all great but has anyone thought about the effect of having a 3G device literaly stuck to your brain all day? I think that would pose of  a few health alarms.

In summary, what would make it or break it is the coolness factor of the interface and what you can do with it, if Google gets it right and the market accepts it then we’ve got a big disruptor to the phone/communication industry.

All in all, Project Glass is very ambitious which is something that Google should be commended on but we hope that one day it could come a reality.

You’ve invested in your website, and like any other investment its main purpose is it give you a return. Your website is your best sales person, and like any of your other employees may require some directions. The best thing about your website, in terms of measuring its marketing performance, is that it’s all analytics. It’s all measurable, countable, and traceable.

Google analtyics featuring adwords

Google analytics - a powerful tool.

Here are five ways to make use of Website Analytics:
1. Have clear measurable marketing goals so you can track progression. Before you build your website determine what its main purpose is and what is it that you expect it to do for your business. If your websites main objective is to promote your brand then represent that in a number, so that you can optimize against when you go live. Whatever your business or brand goals are, the performance of your website in reaching those goals can be measured. Translating this data will allow you to better manage your online marketing tools.

2. Assess your search engine positioning. This is probably the most common use of web analytics. You can easily see which search terms visitors find you through, you can also monitor which key words lead to behavioral events like filling out your “contact us ” form or spending more time on your “services ” page. You can also monitor which search terms lead to visitors spending less or more time on your website this can give a good indication as to which search terms are most specific to what you’re offering.

3. Ensure that website navigation is optimal and is as user friendly as possible. Being able to see how your visitors find you, has its benefits of course but being able to see what they do once they get there can be more beneficial. There is no point getting visitors where you need them if you can’t keep them there long enough to turn them into potentials. Monitor your bounce rate and manage or adjust your content to better reflect to visitors that you are what they‘re looking for. If they’re going directly from your homepage to your products page then straight to your blogs, then you might wants to figure out why they aren’t going to your shopping cart.

4. Eliminate bad links. Your analytics can help you find where visitors are encountering bad links, when a visitor comes across a bad link on your site they will in most cases leave. Rarely will visitors click back and try to find what they’re looking for somewhere else on your website. Monitoring glitches and making internal improvements as required will allow your site do accomplish its purpose as adequately as possible.
5. Plan your marketing campaign. Your website analytics can help you see where your visitors are from and when they’re online. Use this information to direct your marketing campaign, spend more on your PPC campaign in regions that bring in fewer visitors, send your newsletters out at a time where potential customers are most likely to be at their computers. Marketing decisions are best made based on actual data, and web analytics is one of the best ways to make informed decisions.

If you’re lost when it comes to understanding your web analytics or don’t even know if you’ve got them set up on your site, give us a call and we can help you out.

Mobile Technology and its affect on the Industry.

As mobile technology continues to advance, the trend of mobile commerce is infecting consumers fast!

Mobile Commerce happens on all devices

Mobile Commerce happens on all devices

Consumers have already got a taste of buying in an anywhere anytime scenario, with handsets always being within arms reach. The convenience of mCommerce has no competition. If businesses are serious about embracing new technologies and attracting next generation consumers they need to act now.

Online payment specialists Paypal have released surveys that reveal a dramatic jump in the amount of online transactions being made via mobile phones in Australia. Conducted by net ratings group Nielsen, the mCommerce: Secure Insight report showed that last year Australians spent $155 million online via their mobile phones, this figure is predicted to increase drastically over the next few years as the in surge of smart phones keep increasing. Australia is one of the leading global m-commerce markets, beaten only by Japan and Korea.

The benefits of M-commerce is not just limited to people who purchase goods electronically, it also allows for  price and product comparisons and at times that can be far more important. Merchants need to ensure that their sales strategies reflect their business goals, if reaching a large audience is a key goal, companies should consider launching an m-commerce site, which is accessible by anyone with an Internet-enabled mobile device.

For retailers that already have an online presence, finding a cost-effective m-commerce solution may be as simple as getting in touch with their existing e-commerce providers.

ust having a website isn’t going to guarantee its success, you need to actively make the most of it. If you want recognition or you want more business your website is the first place you should start.  What baffles us the most is, when we see businesses that conduct their business in ways that are professional, efficient and practical, yet their websites reflect the complete opposite. If this sounds like you please consider the following tips:

Appearances matters

Your website does not have to be a masterpiece worthy of design awards, but if you fall below the certain standard of design quality, you can’t expect to be taken seriously. If your website looks like it was put together by an 8 year with internet access then people will assume you are an unprofessional, incapable and unreliable operation. Within minutes of interacting with your substandard website potential customers will eliminate you as a possible vendor.

Whereas a well designed website can work wonders for you. It instantly communicates that you are stable, successful and that you value quality. A lack of professionalism is never a good thing, even if you’re just a two man team working out of a garage you can look just as successful and capable as any of your competitors.  I good website won’t cost you a lot you just need to deal with a team that knows what they are doing.

Content
It’s a website not a newspaper, give prospects what they are looking for and what they need. Its important to understand you market and know what your target audience essentially needs to know.

Your homepage should establish who you are, what products and services you provide, and what makes you different to yours competitors. Your homepage on first glance should communicate to  prospects what it is you do and what benefits you can provide. Keep the text customer oriented there is no need for information overflow. Give customers and prospects reasons to keeping coming back to your site. By offering things like tutorials, special offers and professional tips, you can keep your content interesting and engaging.

Navigation.
You know the complexity of your business, but just because your business is complex doesn’t mean your website has to be.  You may have a diverse range of products and services all tailored for a range of different types of customers and industries. Being able to effectively direct customers and channeling them to the products and services they need is of the up most importance.  Before you start or re do your website decide how you want customers to move around your site

Work out your navigation in advance, so that it is user friendly and allows for customers to extract what they are looking for.

Get Found
The same way having your business card sitting on your desk will do you no good a website not properly optimised will do you little good. We know that Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is tough subject, but a specialist can make sure your website is found by search engines. But if your business is not ready for it then a PPC (Pay Per Click) campaign maybe more for you. Whichever one it maybe don’t let finding you turn into a game of  ‘Where’s Wally’.

Keep up
There is nothing worse than an out-of-date website, it communicates to your customers that you lack in diligence. Out of date information like last years offers or an out of date staff list all reflect an image that your company doesn’t care. Make sure you get a website with an inbuilt Content management system (CMS) so that you can update it as frequently and easily as you like.

Promote yourself
Facebook and Twitter are not just for teenagers, In fact, more and more businesses are using these forms of social media to gather online communities that are interested in their line of work. You can post articles about your industry, promote new products and developments and invite followers to upcoming events. These forums provide for customers to interact with you and each other, the ability to share knowledge helps to build your company’s brand and promote your company’s position in the industry. Post press releases on your website and/or blog, then link to them on Facebook and Twitter, make sure visitors can share your content by including a ‘share’ option. Utilising social media facilities will also give you SEO benefits helping you rank higher in search engines.

Add your website link to your listings on online directories. Most directories only give you the option to give a brief description of your business adding your URL will direct prospects to your website where they can find all they need to know about your business. Don’t forget basic things, like adding your URL to your business card and including it on other forms of advertising like posters and brochures.

There are many  things you can do to make your website more effective, and truly reflect the quality and professionalism of your products and services.  Your website is an asset to your business acquiring it isn’t enough you have to make the most of it, take the time and care to make it appealing, interesting, informative, easy to navigate and easy to find.
